Religious Freedom

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Thus begins the Bill of Rights. But if the framers thought that the primacy of this injunction would help the words stand on their own, the subsequent two centuries would prove them wrong. This exhibit traces the long and contested history of religious freedom in the United States.
